Event Information
Malleswaram was one of the country's first suburbs planned by the princely rulers, the Wodeyars, as a response to the late 19th century bubonic plague. During the experience, we will walk through the neighborhood that encompasses many rich histories: from a erstwhile colonial-era suburb to a current and thriving cultural and commercial playground.
The walk is mainly along the shaded and canopied streets of Sampige (magnolia champaca) and Margosa (neem) roads. We will start with the Kadu Malleswara temple (built in the 17th century), experience the dazzling colours and fragrances of the fruit and vegetable market, visit a couple of heritage buildings, listen to the history of the 115-year-old Venugopala Swamy Temple (built by the Wodeyars), and conclude our experience at the New Krishna Bhavan near the Mantri Mall. The restaurant is an apt destination to end our journey as it is a place that serves food to the mill workers in the neighbourhood. We will pamper our taste buds with gastronomic delights like masala idli and kesari bath, and soak ourselves in the stories of how the neighbourhood changed from ‘Mill to Mall.
