TalkTheWalk 4: Battle of Pratapgad
Over 370 years ago, a momentous historical event took place in a small obscure corner of Maharashtra - a decisive battle between a small band of Maratha soldiers led by a young Shivaji Maharaj, and the military might of the Adilshahi empire led by experienced General Afzal Khan. The battle of Pratapgad was the first time a local Indian army had defeated a force of invaders from Central Asia. This was the beginning of a reversal of tide and the rise of a new local Indian state which culminated in the pan-Indian Maratha empire of 1803.
In our fourth #TalkTheWalk, Maratha history expert Chandrashekhar Nene talks about the importance of the Battle of Pratapgad in context to its times and describes the stratagems that led to the founding of self-rule by sons of the soil.
About the speaker:
Chandrashekhar Nene is a former IT professional with a keen interest in Maratha history. He has extensively written about the subject in newspapers and magazines, and has also delivered several public lectures on Maharashtra’s cultural history.
