Event Information

About the Walk

Mattancherry has been synonymous with the cosmopolitan mix of traders, travellers and merchants from different parts of the world who came together to this city with one aim - the spice trade. The old town with its charm gets lively and bustling as the evening sets in and we go out to explore the vibrant food traditions of some of the communities as they come out for their afternoon tea & snacks. Their influence in the culinary landscape in these parts are quite unique to the city itself.

About the Storyteller

Johann is the Founder and Chief Storyteller at The Kochi Heritage Project. In addition to storytelling, he is an avid traveller and has been active in the travel industry in various roles over the past few years since leaving his corporate career. Johann has been documenting Kochi's diverse heritage on digital media, and actively researches and curates sensory immersive heritage experiences to deepen and broaden the understanding of the history, art, architecture, culture, cuisine and the people of Kochi through The Kochi Heritage Project.

What will you taste

We will start from the Konkani quarter with some evening snack only found with the Konkanis to set your rumbling tummies and palates rolling. We then visit a Konkani family who will host us for some delectable sweets and savories.

Post that we enter the Mappilla Muslim quarter in Mattancherry and will try out some of their “naalu mani kadikal - Four PM bites” with some really interesting stories about them. This area will also feature non vegetarian fare and meat for those who enjoy them.

Finally, we wind down with some unique Gujarati fare and water it down with a thirst quenching drink from them.
