Salsa is a popular Latin Dance form, born in the streets of New York, with a strong,
African, Cuban, Creole, Dominican, Colombian, Puerto Rican and Spanish Influence.
The reason for its popularity, is that it is far less formal and is open to innovation.
It is considered a true dance of the people: changing and adapting across different
cultures and landscapes.
It is played by artists in countries from France to Japan, paired up with music
styles from pop to jazz, and can range from being energetic and explosive to
intimate and romantic. It has become a world-wide phenomenon because it is
so malleable, and the music… wow, the music.
Lourd Vijay brought Salsa to India in 1998 and since then the Salsa community
has grown to a to tremendous following in India. With multiple socials, events and
festivals being hosted in India, the biggest and the most fun being the
India International Salsa Congress and the Goa Salsa Festival, Salsa is surely
here to stay.
