Searching for patents and free and paid databases is a special skill that requires an understanding of: the patent system, organisation and structure of databases, specialty searching skills, techniques that work and do not work, and so on. Learning patent searching and analysis helps inventors, companies and other organisations:

• Uncover patents/applications filed in their area of work and field of science/technology;
• Perform a preliminary analysis to learn if their inventions/ideas are patentable;
