Do highly motivated learners learn better than unmotivated learners? Well… of course they do. But, often not for the reasons one might think. One can be highly motivated and not learn a thing! That is, if the instructional design is not appropriate for the lesson. In fact, a bad design can kill motivation to learn. Alternatively, good design paired with a highly relevant topic can inspire. Motivation gets the learners into the room. It can help keep them there. But, motivation alone does not translate into learning.
This Session is about how you can influence your participants’ motivation positively to keep them engaged. Whether you are an instructor, a school teacher, or a facilitator, techniques that create more motivating environments makes your job easier. Over the 90-minute session, we will explore the different types of motivation— the kind that supports engagement, the kind that can undermine it, and the kind that well… can just kill a room. We will explore the different strategies and tactics you can employ to affect participant motivation, and what to do if folks just don’t want to be there. At the end of the session, you will receive a checklist you can use when facilitating to ensure the likelihood for creating a more motivating environment.
