Do you love to explore the past? Then the Baranagar Heritage Walk is ideal to keep you engaged on 1st December morning.
Apart from the temples built by the legendary Dakats ' Chitey and Raghu' or by the famous businessman referred mostly as 'The King of Black Diamond or the Coal King' or by affluent Zamindars, the area is blessed by the presence of Ramakrishna and Vivekananda. Ramakrishna Dev was cremated here and the first monastery of Ramakrishna order was built in Baranagar.
The dilapidated mansions of the Bengali affluents and stalwarts of yesteryear covered with thick foliage still testify for the glorious heydays. The Sati ghat echoes the shout of widows who were forced to accompany their husbands in the funeral pyre. Baranagar still carries the pain of the tragedy of mass killing of 1971, a case till unsolved.
Like all other places Baranagar is also moving on, high-rises are coming up by pulling down the old buildings. Let's explore the place together and make a photographic documentation before all old mansions are turned to debris.
