Hamta Pass and Chandrataal

Event Information

Schedule

  • Day 1: Travel to Delhi by flight from Pune/Mumbai. Travel from Delhi to Rumsu over the night.
  • Day 2: Reporting at Rumsu base camp and Acclimatization walk.

Get down at Patlikuhal(20 km after Kullu and 20 km before Manali). Transport options are readily available from Patlikuhal to Rumsu camp.

All the participants should report at Rumsu base camp by 8 AM and will undergo a registration process. Freshening up and breakfast will happen at the base camp. Post breakfast we will go for an acclimatization walk.

Lunch at 1 PM. Post lunch orientation. Orientation will cover all the general instructions that could be helpful for the trek like backpacking, marching technique and medical awareness. Post snacks we will have an ice-breaking session.

Overnight stay at Rumsu base camp.

  • Day 3: Rumsu to Chikka

After morning breakfast we will start the day’s trek with a beautiful drive to Hamta dam from Rumsu at 8 am. The trek to Chikka starts from Hamta Dam and is easy. It takes around 2-3 hours to complete it. There is a small forest patch and then two wooden bridges before you reach the campsite. Chikka has big rock boulders and a beautiful waterfall.

Overnight in tents at Chikka.

  • Day 4: Chikka to Balu ka Ghera

After morning breakfast we will start the trek for Balu Ka Ghera. Trek duration is around 4 to 5 hours from Chikka to Balu ka Ghera scaling 11900 feet. The initial part of the trek goes through the bank of the river crossing few rock boulders. There is a water stream that needs to be crossed on the way.

Balu ka Ghera is a large plain ground on the bank of the river and camping at this spot is a dream in reality. One can spot Indrasan, the highest peak of Manali valley from here. Snacks would be served in the evening followed by dinner. Overnight camping at Balu Ka Ghera.

  • Day 5: Balu ka Ghera to Shia Ghoru

Today’s trek starts early as we will try covering the maximum snow patch before sunrise. The trek route from Balu Gehra towards Shia Ghoru is a moderate climb, scaling 4,200 meters. The trek duration is relatively long and starts by 5 am in the morning from Balu ka Gera. It takes around 4 to 5 hours to reach the top of the Hamta Pass. The aerial views of Spiti valley from Hamta Pass is quite breathtaking. We will then descend from Hamta top towards Shia Ghoru. The descent is steep and at times when snow is abundant one can slide down to reach Shia Ghoru.

  • Day 6: Shia Ghoru to Chandrataal to Chatru.

After morning breakfast we will start the trek to Chatru. The beautiful view of the valleys of Lahaul and Spiti are not to be missed during the trek. The mountains of Pir Panjal and Spiti ranges add to the beauty. Chatru is a meeting point of roads coming from Rohtang Pass, Hampta Pass, and Spiti. Jeep safari to Chandrataal from Chatru.   • Day 7: Jeep Ride from Chatru to Rumsu base camp. Departure at 4 PM.

After morning breakfast we will start the jeep ride to Manali via Rohtang Pass. Certificate distribution.Departure after 4 PM from Rumsu base camp for New Delhi.

  • Day 8: New Delhi to Pune/Mumbai return journey by flight.

 

Things to carry:

  •  Trekking shoes: Carry trekking shoes good grip and ankle support. Do not carry sports shoes. 
  •  Three layers of warm clothes: Carry two or three-layer jackets, fleece jackets and a padded jacket.
  •  Two/Three trek pants: Carry light cotton trek pants. Denim/jeans and shorts are not suitable for trekking.
  •  Three t-shirts (collared/dry-fit): Full sleeved t-shirts that prevent sunburns on the neck and arms. Carry one or two dry-fit t-shirts. 
  •  Thermals: Carry thermals (top and bottom). 
  •  Sunglasses: Sunglasses are mandatory. There will be a lot of snow on the tree and can cause snow blindness.
  •  Cap: At high altitude, the sun is extra harsh so carry a cap to protect yourself.
  •  Waterproof hand gloves: Carry waterproof gloves and avoid woolen gloves as they will get wet if you touch snow. 
  •  Socks (3-4 pairs) and a pair of woolen socks: Apart from two sports socks, you can take a pair of woolen socks for the night.
  •  Headlamp/LED torch: Mandatory
  •  Raincoat/Ponchos: At high altitudes, snowfall and rain are quite common and it’s mandatory to carry a poncho so that you don’t get wet. The trek will continue as planned even during rainfall. Your poncho should protect you rain. Carry a backpack cover for extra protection from rain for your belongings.
  •  Daypack (20 liters): You will need this to carry water bottles, lunch box, and personal medical kit in case you decide to offload your backpack.
  •  Lunch box and water bottle: Every participant should have their personal lunch box and a good water bottle.

Inclusion:

  • Accommodation – On a triple sharing basis. Stay is separate for Male and Female
  • Meals – (Breakfast, lunch, snacks, and dinner). We provide simple, nutritious Veg/Jain food on all days of the trek
  • Rucksack -- A 60-liter bag with rain cover is provided for use in trekking. You can deposit your extra luggage with your bags at our campsite.
  • Camping charges – All trekking permits and forest camping charges are included.
  • Trekking equipment – High-quality tents and sleeping bags in all the camps. Sleeping bags can withstand temperatures as low as -10 ºC.
  • Gaiters – To prevent snow from entering inside your shoe.
  • Microspikes - Helps you walking on hard snow terrain. [Only if required]
  • Safety equipment and Emergency First aid kit, oxygen cylinders, oximeter etc. will be with guide/trek leader and at the campsite as well to deal with emergencies. HAPO Chamber bag will be available to deal with any emergency in Sar Pass at Nagaru. An MBBS doctor will also be available at base camp.
  • Expert trek Leaders All our trek leaders are at least qualified in basic/advanced mountaineering and first aid course.
  • Expert Trek support team The mountain staff on this trek consists of certified guides, cooks, helpers and porters.
  • Personal Insurance

Exclusion:

  • Food to and from the base camp
  • Backpack offloading charges – If you wish to offload your backpack, there will be an additional charge of Rs. 500/day per bag.
  • Cost of Emergency
  • Bottled water.
  • Any personal expense.

Mandatory Documents:

  • Original and photocopy of government photo identity card- (Aadhar card)
  • Medical Certificate (signed by a registered MBBS doctor)
  • NOC form (by trekker)

Indemnity:

I am aware that participating in adventure sports like kayaking, cycling, trekking, climbing and rappelling has some inherent risks of illness, injury or death. This may be a result of the negligence of others, myself, forces of nature or other agencies known or unknown. Rescue and medical services may not be able to reach me in time.

I hereby fully assume all risk of illness, injury or death, and  The Kayakers, its owners, employees, consultants, agents and associates from all actions, claims or demands from any damages resulting out of my participation in this sporting event. This obligation is binding upon me personally as well as on my heirs, executors, administrators, assigns and all members of my family.

I hereby authorize any medical treatment deemed necessary in the event of any emergency, injury or mishap. I agree to bear all costs of rescue and/or medical services that may be incurred on my behalf.

I recognize that as the provider of services, The Kayakers will operate under a covenant of good faith and fair dealing, but that it may be necessary to terminate any event or adventure excursion due to forces of nature, medical necessities or other reasons. I accept their right to take such actions for the safety of all participants including me.

I understand that though precautions will be taken to provide a safe and enjoyable experience, there can be no guarantee of absolute safety against illness, injury and/or accident and that there are grave and unpredictable elements of risk in any adventure, sport or activity associated with the outdoors.

I agree that any film or photographs of me as a participant becomes the property of The Kayakers and may be used for promotional and commercial purposes.
