Padma Vibhushan Yogacharya B.K.S. Iyengar (1918 - 2014) (respectfully known as Guruji) is considered as one of the foremost authorities on Yoga who made this ancient Indian practice accessible to millions all over the world. His methodology of teaching (popularly known as Iyengar Yoga) is being practiced by people across 85 countries. He created a unique synthesis of classical Yoga with western medical science by refining the Yoga practice with correct anatomical positioning, physiological functioning, proper sequencing and timing in the practice of asanas and pranayama, the two limbs of yoga. He also made numerous modifications in classical asanas for therapeutic application of Yoga to help patients with ailments and disabilities, and people across age groups – making it accessible to all. He also introduced props such as belts, blankets, chairs etc., which are available in common household to help to be able to perform the asanas with efficacy and ease. It is he who showed that through the limb of asanas, one can experience the other aspects of 2nd century BC’s Sage Patanjali’s Ashtanga yoga.
In 2018, Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute (RIMYI), Pune is celebrating Birth Centenary of Guruji and planning to conduct 4-day workshops across India to spread his teachings that have helped millions of people across the world.
