Event Information

Eid al-Adha, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice or Bakrid, is one of the most important religious holidays celebrated by Muslims worldwide. It commemorates the willingness of Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God's command. The holiday also marks the end of Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca.

Eid al-Adha falls on the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah, the 12th and final month of the Islamic lunar calendar. The date may vary each year according to the sighting of the moon, and it lasts for four days.

The celebration begins with a special prayer, performed in congregation at mosques or outdoor prayer grounds. Muslims dress in their finest clothes and gather for the prayer, which is led by an imam. The sermon delivered during the prayer usually focuses on the significance of sacrifice, gratitude, and devotion to God.

After the prayer, families and friends come together to exchange greetings and share meals. It is customary to give gifts, particularly to children, and to visit relatives and neighbors. Many Muslims also use this occasion to give to charity and help those in need.

The highlight of Eid al-Adha is the sacrifice of an animal, usually a sheep, goat, cow, or camel. The sacrifice symbolizes Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his son and reminds Muslims of the importance of obedience and submission to God. The meat from the sacrificed animal is divided into three parts: one-third is kept for the family, one-third is shared with relatives and friends, and one-third is given to the poor and those in need.

Eid al-Adha is a time of joy, unity, and reflection for Muslims around the world. It strengthens the sense of community, encourages acts of kindness and generosity, and reinforces the values of sacrifice, faith, and devotion. It is a significant occasion that brings families and communities together to celebrate their shared religious beliefs and express gratitude to God.
