About the Walk

Glimpses of Cochin's Royal Past

Tripunithura was the seat of power of the Cochin Royal Family from the beginning of the 19th Century. This walk will take the participant through some of the important sites inside the Tripunithura Fort (Royal Town), including the Sree Poornathrayeesa Temple, Manimalika, Kalikotta Palace, Iron Bridge, Oottupura and the elephant stables. The participants will be taken through these sites as they are engaged in stories about the Cochin Royal Family and its contribution to multiculturalism, public infrastructure, the national movement and the conservation of traditional art forms in the Cochin State. Explore the magnificence of this Rajanagari.

About the Host

Born in Cochin and raised in Bangalore, Balagopal Varma is a heritage and travel enthusiast. He has been organizing heritage walks in Tripunithura and Ernakulam for the past few years. His work on heritage conservation and travel is focused on the erstwhile Cochin State, which is slowly disappearing from collective memory along with its built heritage. Balagopal resides in Tripunithura and is closely connected with the Cochin Royal Family and his grandfather was the titular Elaya Raja of Cochin.
